The Upper Madison River Spring Fly Box is hand-curated specifically for the conditions, hatches, and trout behavior you'll encounter on the Upper Madison from April through early June. Spring on the Upper Madison begins with the skwala stonefly — one of the first significant dry fly hatches of the Montana season. Water is cold and flows are rising, but the fish are active and the skwala hatch draws them to the surface.

This box is built around the Upper Madison's spring hatch calendar — skwala stoneflies, blue-winged olives, and midges. Every fly was chosen with dry fly fishing during the skwala hatch and nymphing between hatches in mind, giving you exactly what you need to match what the fish are eating at this time of year.

Pro tip from the water: The Upper Madison skwala hatch is a must-fish event — typically mid-March through April. Fish the afternoon when temperatures peak and watch for fish rising in the flat water below riffles.
