The Upper Madison River Winter Fly Box is hand-curated specifically for the conditions, hatches, and trout behavior you'll encounter on the Upper Madison from December through March. The Upper Madison stays fishable below Hebgen Lake through winter. Midges dominate and trout stack in the deeper runs and tailouts, feeding steadily even on the coldest days.

This box is built around the Upper Madison's winter hatch calendar — midges with occasional BWO activity on warmer days. Every fly was chosen with nymphing and midge fishing in slower water in mind, giving you exactly what you need to match what the fish are eating at this time of year.

What's in the box:

36 flies total — 18 unique patterns, 2 of each — covering midge larvae, zebra midges, RS2s, and small BWO emergers. No filler. No patterns that don't belong on this river in this season.

Pro tip from the water: Fish the deep tailouts below the major riffles in winter. Upper Madison trout concentrate in these areas and feed on midges drifting through the current — find the seam and you'll find fish.
