The Smith River Spring Fly Box is hand-curated specifically for the conditions, hatches, and trout behavior you'll encounter on the Smith from April through early June. Spring permit draws are the most competitive in Montana for good reason. The Smith in early season offers technical nymphing in clear water and the anticipation of great things to come. Water is often near perfect by late May.

This box is built around the Smith's spring hatch calendar — midges, BWOs, and early caddis. Every fly was chosen with nymphing and dry fly fishing as conditions develop in mind, giving you exactly what you need to match what the fish are eating at this time of year.

36 flies total — 18 unique patterns, 2 of each — covering BWO emergers, midge patterns, early caddis nymphs, and small soft hackles. No filler. No patterns that don't belong on this river in this season.

Pro tip from the water: Spring permits are the most sought-after. If you draw one in May, expect technical fishing — these fish see a few floats per season and they're smart.
